CLASSICAL CIVILIZATION, GRADE 12, UNIVERSITY PREPARATION LVV4U Prerequisite: Grade 10 English Visiting impressive historical sites in Tunisia, Malta and Italy brings to life the western world’s immense debt to the Classical past. From the core of our political and judicial systems, to the architecture of the buildings we work in, play in and pray in, to the way we think and speak (and the freedom that we have to do so) - the classical world is ever-present and everywhere.
This course offers an unparalleled opportunity for students to explore how the beliefs and achievements of the classical past have shaped Western society. It provides students with a broad overview of the history and culture of classical antiquity, concentrating on a cross-section of some of the most famous objects and monuments, myths and literary works and philosophical treatises of Greco-Roman culture, emphasizing their enduring legacy today. Formal class lectures in conjunction with on-site tours in Tunisia, Malta, and Italy, give students the unique opportunity to contextualize textbook material with first-hand archaeological discovery.
Throughout the course students are encouraged and challenged to strengthen their oral and written communication skills in order to prepare them for Grade 12 and post-secondary school years. A variety of activities (including literary/artifact analyses, myth re-enactments and primary source reading of Greek and Latin texts), will actively engage students and provide a stimulating and interactive learning environment to think critically and creatively while standing in the midst of these incredible sites.
