This
unique program which combines an on-line course followed by on-site
studies in Bermuda,
provides you with the opportunity to
obtain a credit at one of the world's oldest and leading research
stations, the Bermuda Institute Of Ocean Sciences. This
facility is renowned for its examination into the connection between the ocean and human health,
and marine science including coral reef ecology, & environmental quality.
Bermuda has a sub-tropical climate and consists of 350
islands created by underwater volcanic eruptions that took
place over 100 million years ago. The islands as they appear
today were sculpted by ocean currents and covered by
limestone - as a result Bermuda is surrounded by the
northernmost coral
reef in the world which created the silky soft pink sandy
beaches and clear turquoise waters for which Bermuda is
famous!
The island's
compact size, plethora of shipwrecks, differing tidal times,
and abundance of coral reefs and marine life, provides an ideal study
ground for hands on fieldwork projects that are incorporated
into your program.
The
first 14 days of this program are done On-Line - we then meet
at Toronto Pearson Airport and depart for 12 days on
St.
George's Island in Bermuda - where classes will be held in the mornings followed by afternoon excursions to compliment and
enhance your study program
and research projects: you will
sail out on a research boat to
Nonsuch Island to study native
trees, plants and birds including the once thought extinct bird species; sail to
North Rock to experience
a breathtaking water world; head out to various bays and reefs to snorkel
amongst the corals and incredible marine life such as parrot fish
and large squid; explore
hidden caves and swim amongst the stalactites and
stalagmites; visit sand dunes, learn the importance of
mangroves, and perform sand analysis and restoration
projects on the many bays and
beaches around the island.
Fully equipped labs, library, common study rooms, and
computer facilities along with resident research staff are
available to provide you with all the resources you need to
complete your credit course.
And
of course you will have free time to shop, enjoy some of the
tasty local rum cakes, visit the 400 year old forts and towns,
enjoy the unspoiled beaches, body surf, tour the island on a
guided jet ski tour, swim with
Dolphins or join in a soccer,
football or volleyball game on site at the station.
The Bermuda Biological
Station for Research is situated on vast rolling hills and the beach is
only steps away where you can kayak, swim and snorkel.
Accommodation will be at the Research Station Residence in
double rooms and breakfast, lunch and dinner is served daily.
