Program Cost: $6695 July 2nd - July 27th (Dates subject to change)
Join us for an incredible journey through the vast lands of China to learn about this nation’s complex history and cultures and explore the breathtaking and diverse landscape.
To experience all aspects of the rural and commercial ways of life in this unique nation we start our adventure in Beijing, travel through central China, move further south to the city of Guilin and finally end in the bustling city of Hong Kong.
Home of the last summer Olympic Games, Beijing is a thriving city full of sites to discover. We walk around the Imperial Forbidden City and across Tiananmen Square, where Mao's Communist rule was first established to learn about significant historical events that have shaped China over the centuries.
An exciting rickshaw ride will take us through the old 'Hutong' villages past busy flea markets and tea houses. And finally we hike across and take in the panoramic views of this stunning land from The Great Wall of China which once served to defend this country from foreign invaders. Taking a Tai Chi lesson from a master at one of the towers of this wall that spans over 6000 km will make this site all the more meaningful before we glide down on sleds to the bottom.
Next stop is Shanghai, a vibrant economic centre in China known for its unique futuristic architecture and some of the tallest buildings in the world. The French, British and American influences from the past are evident in sections of the city while other areas have retained their traditional Chinese elements.
We move to Chengdu where we visit a Panda breeding facility and volunteer our time to feed and care for the resident Pandas - a first hand encounter with these creatures which live in the amazing bamboo forests of the region. The city of Chengdu has several temples, tea houses and villages that give us a glimpse of what it was like to live in China thousands of years ago.
Further south in Guilin we ride a barge along the Li River to view the picturesque landscape and villages along the banks, cross incredible terraced lands and rice paddies, hike into magnificent caves and visit the striking Sun and Moon Pagodas. While visiting the Longji Terrace fields we will stay at a hotel in the mountains to take in the incredible view and experience the people, culture, traditional wooden village homes and the breathtaking countryside.
Our last destination will be Hong Kong, a former British Colony and the financial heart of China, to take in the vibrant city teeming with people, restaurants and shops - a city that literally never sleeps.
