Study English in the lively cities of
London, Edinburgh and Dublin and in the academically
famous
setting of
Oxford - four principal areas in the remarkable
history of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Literature and history come alive while we explore renowned
landmarks and relevant sites and engage in experiences
recorded by various authors and playwrights.
To give you some insight into higher learning at famous
settings abroad our residences and classes will be located
at
Universities in London, Oxford, Edinburgh & Dublin.
While in London, you will experience
Shakespeare performances in historic theatres, visit museums
which focus
on authors, poets and playwrights and discover some of the
most fascinating districts including Westminster, Piccadilly
Circus, Trafalgar Square, and Covent Gardens. We will walk
through Hyde Park, stop by
Big Ben
and the Parliament Buildings, and watch the changing of the
guards at Buckingham Palace.
For a panoramic view of the city you have the option to
ride the London Eye ferris wheel or climb the famous Tower
of London - sailing there on a cruise along the River
Thames.
And for those who wish to shop - our group will visit the
Harrods
complex, Oxford and Regent's Street, and the Knightsbridge
area. For unique treasures we head to the open-area market
stalls at Camden Lock and Portobello, which are surrounded
by impressive buildings and courtyards.
For
a completely different experience we spend time in the university
town of Oxford - a historic location which offers you incredibly
designed colleges topped with spectacular spires, tended gardens and
grand entrances.
We are located in the heart of Oxford at one of the most popular and
quaint university residences just 2 blocks from the city centre.
Oxford has become a bustling location with numerous museums,
bookstores, shops, and cafes. As part of your program we will
experience outdoor plays held on lush green forested college grounds
- a setting which makes you feel part of the magical
performance!
For fun we will be
punting
(comparable to steering gondolas!) on the River Cherwell,
under bridges, around the town and along many of the college grounds
and finally as a special treat we will have typical fried mars bars
and cream tea (scones, jam and clotted cream).
In Edinburgh students are offered an exhilarating glimpse
into Scotland's tumultuous but
magnificent
history. Between the city's two ancient royal residences in
the Old Town lies the Royal Mile - a remarkable stretch of
streetscape that has remained largely unchanged for hundreds
of years. Along this Mile with its narrow "closes" (short
narrow side streets), a short distance away from campus, are
all the shops, cafes, & museums. Edinburgh castle sits
imposingly atop an extinct cone-shaped volcano at the
western end of the Mile and remains Scotland's most powerful
symbol. At the other end of the Mile lies Holyroodhouse
Palace, home of Mary, Queen of Scots before her exile, and
now Queen Elizabeth II's royal summer residence in Scotland.
Our final week will be in the world-class and vibrant city
of Dublin, once home to authors
Oscar Wilde and James Joyce, where students will
reside in the heart of it all! The buildings north and south
of the
River Liffey
and the numerous narrow side streets mentioned in "The
Dubliners" written by Joyce in 1914 still exist today and
will offer students an unforgettable cultural setting and
enriched academic experience.
As an option, students can also visit the enchanting
Coleraine region in Northern Ireland - which has been an awesome
experience for our past students. The scenery here is spectacular
where you can explore the craggy shorelines, brilliant green
forests, and amazing beaches - and possibly go swimming - although
the waters are cold! We visit the Giant's Causeway
- a World Heritage Site, the ruins of Dunluce Castle
and walk across
Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge
which is 30 metres above the sea! A tour of
LondonDerry is also included
for students on this optional trip to gain an understanding of the
political history of this region.
