WORLD HISTORY: THE WEST AND THE WORLD, GRADE 12                                                  CHY4U

Prerequisite: Any university or university/college prep course in

Social Sciences and Humanities, Canadian and World Studies, or English

This course investigates the major trends in Western civilization and world history from the 16th Century to the present. Students learn about the interaction between the emerging West and other regions of the world and about the development of modern social, political, and economic systems. The setting in France provides a historical context that will inspire a true sense of history. The skills and knowledge developed in this course enable students to understand and appreciate both the character of historical change and the historical roots of contemporary issues.

 

 

World History to Sixteenth Century, Grade 11                                                       CHW3M

Prerequisite: Canadian History Since World War 1, Grade 10, Academic or Applied

This course investigates the history of humanity from earliest times to the sixteenth century. Students will analyse diverse societies from around the world, with an emphasis on the political, cultural, and economic structures and historical forces that have shaped the modern world. They will apply historical inquiry, critical-thinking, and communication skills to evaluate the influence of selected individuals, groups, and innovations and to present their own conclusions.

 

 

EXPERIENCE  THE ARTS:, Interdisciplinary Course, GRADE 12                                     IDC4U

Prerequisite: Any university or university/college prep course in

Social Sciences and Humanities, Canadian and World Studies, or English

This course will help students develop and consolidate the skills required for and knowledge of different subjects and disciplines to solve problems, make decisions, create personal meaning, and present findings beyond the scope of a single subject or discipline. Students will apply the principles and processes of inquiry and research to effectively use a range of print, electronic, and mass media resources; to analyse historical innovations and exemplary research; and to investigate real-life situations and career opportunities in interdisciplinary endeavours. They will also assess their own cognitive and affective strategies, apply general skills in both familiar and new contexts, create innovative products, and communicate new knowledge.

 

 

FASHION INDUSTRY, GRADE 12                                                                                              HNB40

Prerequisite: None

This course provides a historical perspective on fashion and design, exploring the origins, influence, and importance of fashion as an expression of national, cultural, religious, and personal identity. Students will learn about the many facets of the Canadian fashion industry, including both large-scale and small entrepreneurial enterprises, and its worldwide links, as well as gaining practical experience in garment design, production, and care. This course also refines students’ skills used in researching and investigating various aspects of the fashion industry.

 

FRENCH COURSES

 

Our French courses are designed to take advantage of the sights and sounds of France providing an extensive study of the French language, literature and culture. What better way to learn the socio-cultural aspects of language (use of tu and vous) than to listen to and speak with those who know the language well.

 

Learning will take place both in the classroom and beyond where several classes will be “on foot” allowing students to interact with restaurateurs, market vendors and locals - engaging them in real conversations. They will be encouraged to practice spoken French at every opportunity, to become observant of vocabulary differences, nuance of accent, diction and tone.

 

In Paris, they will learn about some of the great thinkers and have the opportunity to discuss philosophy much like they once did in a French café. Readings are chosen specifically to reflect the milieu in Paris and the South of France and will include a selection of novels, plays, poetry, stories newspaper articles, plays and song lyrics providing the opportunityto incorporate language conventions into their written work and oral presentations.

 

Learning the language will also include developing an increased sense of perspective and appreciation for another culture and way of life.  All ssignments will inspire students to broaden their thinking and stretch their imagination while living in France!

 

 

CORE FRENCH, GRADE 11, UNIVERSITY PREPARATION                                                         FSF3U

Prerequisite: Grade 10 Core French

This course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of reading and writing skills and to reinforce oral communication skills. Students will gain a greater understanding of French-speaking culture through their reading of a variety of materials, including a short novel or a play, and through their daily interactions with the sights, sounds, and people of France. Students will produce various written assignments, including a formal essay. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course.

 

 

CORE FRENCH, GRADE 12, UNIVERSITY PREPARATION                                                         FSF4U

Prerequisite: Grade 11 Core French

This course continues the development of French-language skills, both oral and written. Students have a unique opportunity to consolidate their oral skills as they discuss literature, culture, and current issues on location in Paris and the South of France. They read a variety of texts and local publications, and they write a formal essay. The opportunity to experience the language in a French context provides an inspiration for learning correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French.

 

 

FRENCH IMMERSION, GRADE 11, UNIVERSITY PREPARATION                                               FIF3U

Prerequisite: Grade 10 French  Immersion

This course continues the study of French at an immersion level. It develops knowledge and language skills through an examination of francophone literature and culture. Students will study novels, plays, poems, short stories, films, and non-fiction works, many of which will relate to the places and people they will experience in France.  They will produce written assignments in a variety of forms, including critiques and précis. They will also write a formal research essay. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course.

 

 

FRENCH IMMERSION, GRADE 12, UNIVERSITY PREPARATION                                               FIF4U

Prerequisite: Grade 11 French  Immersion

This course provides for extensive study of French literature and culture from the Middle Ages to the present. It will be conducted in immersion settings in France, in Paris and the South. Students will study novels, plays, poems, films, and non-fiction works produced in various historical periods, and will write a formal research paper. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be practiced in a French environment throughout the course.
