From
the white washed houses and ancient ruins of Greece to the
powerful architecture and world renowned landmarks in the
bustling city of
Rome, this program rewards students with
a true understanding of the extent to which modern western
society has been influenced by ancient civilizations.
Our journey will begin in the Greek capital of
Athens to
visit
sites such as the Acropolis, the
Ancient Agora (market) the National Archaeological Museum and the beautiful Sanctuary
of Poseidon and Athena in Sounion. Our travels then take us
north to the Sanctuary of
Delphi, home of the
Oracle. Built
on a mountain with a breathtaking view of the gulf of Itea,
this site was believed to be the centre of the
universe.
For our final stop in
Greece we embark on a ferry to the island
of Mykonos where students have the opportunity to enjoy the
beautiful sandy beaches and blue waters of the Aegean, and
the white washed houses,
churches,
windmills, cafes and
shops for which the island
is famous. Very different from the mainland of Greece! Our
final evening in Greece will be at a restaurant in the
Plaka
for some tasty traditional foods and Greek dancing.
Following
Greece we fly to Italy
and start our journey in
the south. We are stationed in the Sorrento
region
and explore the major archaeological site of the area -
Pompeii - with Mount Vesuvius in full view, and tour the beaches and cliff top villages
on the Amalfi Coast. Then off to Rome, to visit the numerous ruins
and sites which are an integral part of classical studies. We explore all the major piazzas
(squares) - each one with unique monuments, walk through the
Roman Forum and Palatine Hill,
and tour the Colosseum where over two thousand years of politics, archaeology
and art history come to life!
Classes will be conducted in residence and at historic sites
to enhance this learning experience. Accommodation and
classrooms are provided
in 3 and 4 star air conditioned hotels which are centrally located.
