Option 2: august 1st - August 26th (Dates subject to change)
Interested in hopping around the classical islands of Greece – then join us and sail to some of the most beautiful locations in the Aegean sea to visit ancient sites, lively city centres, quaint fishing villages, stunning cliffs, and idyllic beaches.
Our journey will begin in the Greek capital of Athens to visit sites such as the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora (market) the National Archaeological Museum and the beautiful Sanctuary of Poseidon and Athena in Sounion. Here you will learn about the history of the area and its mythology and swim in the beautiful waters below the temples.
We will continue further north to the Sanctuary of Delphi, home of The Oracle and the most famous site in classical Greece. Built on a mountain with a breathtaking view of the gulf of Itea, this site was believed to be the centre of the universe. You will have the option to visit the Meteora in Kalambaka which offer stunning landscape, mountains and cliff views with religious sanctuaries situated at the top often missed by those visiting Greece due to its location.
Our next stop is to the Gulf of Corinth and the incredible ruins at Mycenae to visit the famous Lion’s Gate and the site of Agamemnon’s Royal Palace ending at Epidaurus, the spectacular theatre known for its incredible acoustics.
You will be in awe when you visit these sites that show the sophistication of the builders and thinkers of classical Greece, much of which has influenced western civilization’s architecture, art and politics over the centuries.
Our adventure then begins as we move to the islands. We embark on a ferry to the island of Mykonos where students have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful sandy beaches and blue waters of the Aegean, and the white washed houses, churches, windmills, cafes and shops for which the island is famous. Very different from the mainland of Greece!
We then sail to Santorini, a spectacular volcanic island that is breathtaking and will be one of the most beautiful locations you will ever visit. The island is thought to be the location of what Plato referred to as the Lost city of Atlantis. A volcanic eruption in 1450 BC left behind an island crater with incredible vistas, now covered with arched and whitewashed homes built into cliff tops above the sea.
The beaches vary with red, black and white sand and pebbles and the lively towns with meandering narrow roads are filled with tiny shops and cafes. The archaeological site of the Minoans on the island, called Akrotiri, can be compared to Pompeii in Italy – well preserved and incredibly fascinating – buried and preserved following the volcanic eruptions.
We then sail to Crete to visit the Samaria Gorge and enjoy a full day hike through incredible landscape with soaring mountains and deep valleys. As Crete was the birthplace of the Minoan civilization we explore the Palace of Knossos, home of King Minos – a stunning location, beautifully restored to depict the richness of colour and technique used by the former inhabitants. And of course we will enjoy the beaches on the island with its gold coloured sands and warm waters.
We will return to Athens for our final evening and end the program with tasty traditional foods and Greek dancing.
