Option 2: Summer Semester 2 credit Program Program Cost: $7495 July 2nd - August 8th (Dates subject to change)
Journey throughout Italy and the Isle of Malta to experience the various regions each one more extraordinary than the previous. We begin in Tuscany in one of the most beautiful cities in the world - Florence - to experience its extensive contributions to the history of art - a city that boasts of palaces, museums and basilicas filled with the work of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto & Brunelleschi. The cafes, shops and markets are so much fun to visit and the architecture is impressive.
On this program you will have the opportunity to visit one of the oldest organic farms in the hills of Tuscany for a day to take part in a fun cooking class with a local chef while learning some basic Italian including the meaning of the many Italian gestures - and of course you will be eating the 4 course meal that you create before heading to Siena, a short drive away, to explore the medieval city.
Venice, is only a short train ride away - which gives you the option to explore the architecture and art from the Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods - and boat along the canals, walk through the narrow streets, and discover tiny shops and cafes that form part of the magnificent buildings.
We then move to the southern part of Italy where some of the best pizza in the world is made and stay in the Sorrento region, a picturesque town on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. We take the opportunity to tour the Amalfi Coast with its brightly accented cliff top homes, to swim in the turquoise sea, sunbathe on the spectacular beaches and wander through quaint hillside towns. And if you want to explore the island of Capri and its radiant Grotta Azzurra (or Blue Grotto) for the day with our group, it is a boat ride away.
Nearby, we visit the Pompeii archaeological site - thousands of years old and yet, the most well preserved site that exists today. And you have the option of hiking up Mount Vesuvius near the Bay of Naples to view the enormous crater which spewed all the lava that covered these sites in 79 A.D.
Next, Malta, a warm and sunny island in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, with several sandy beaches, blue green waters, grottos, and caves. The cities are lively and bustling with great cafes and shopping opportunities – a very modern culture encapsulated in ancient historical context. The villages are filled with friendly people, lively festivals and very narrow streets – navigating your way around is part of the fun! The island boasts some of the oldest free standing archaeological structures known in the world from the prehistoric period – which are similar to, but pre-date Stonehenge.
First inhabited by Late Stone-Age Sicilian farmers and later taken over by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs from Tunisia, and masters of ruling houses in Europe, Malta finally fell under British rule. Now part of the European Union, the strategically located island has in turn developed into a nation with foods and a language that reflects all of these cultures!
Malta has several sister islands which our group will visit on ferries and boats, including Comino with its crystal clear waters, and Gozo with its historical sites, 6000 year old archaeological ruins and unique glass factories.
Our final destination is Rome, to enjoy this bustling metropolis and where you can do your last minute shopping! Of course you will walk through the historic Forum, Palatine Hill, and tour the Colosseum but you will have the option to experience a 3D journey through the history of imperial Rome which will make you feel like you are really living the experience in the 4th century AD along with the Gladiators.
And if you nee more time at the beach while in Rome you can visit the coastal areas of Sperlonga and Ostia during your free time.
