Program Cost: $2795 March 10 - 17, 2012 (Dates subject to change)
Spannocchia, where we reside near Florence, Italy, is an amazing location with a working organic farm and wildlife preserve with historic architecture, and beautiful green hills and mountains. The primary goal of the estate is the conservation and preservation of its historic character and the centuries old rural organic farming methods - and you have the option to help and obtain hours towards your community involvement requirement by volunteering if you wish to do so.
There are many fascinating towns and cities our group will visit, including Siena, Florence, and San Gimignano, with narrow streets, incredible historic sites and artistic masterpieces, tiny specialty shops, beautiful piazzas (central squares), amazing cathedrals and towers – all areas that have contributed greatly to the history of art - which we will explore on foot!
We will take part in a fun Traditional Italian Cooking Class to make pasta from scratch, tasty deserts and a traditional Tuscan meal - and of course you will be eating this incredible 4 course meal in the family kitchen! Then you participate in a fun Italian language class – to give you a true sense of being in Tuscany - to learn words that are useful when shopping and bargaining at the local markets of San Lorenzo in the heart of Florence!
We also visit the ruins of the Abbey in San Galgano dating from 1324 AD and bathe in local Hot Springs - the healing waters of Tuscany, weather permitting – so don’t forget your swimsuits!!
Not to worry, you will always have time to shop and visit the cafes or take time to just enjoy the breathtaking scenery!
Optional Volunteer Activities include landscape clean up, trail building and maintenance, organic gardening and tending animals, some of which are endangered species.
