For a unique and unforgettable adventure in Central America..... Journey with us to Belize where you will find the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world, sandy beaches, tropical rainforests, wildlife sanctuaries, spectacular underground caverns, and extraordinarily beautiful ancient Maya ruins - all in one region!
We explore the architectural and cultural achievements of The Olmec, Aztec and Maya spanning 3000 years, followed by the Spanish Conquests of the region. We study complex symbolism in carvings, images and hieroglyphs which depict a mysterious people in richly decorated clothing - creators of precious works of gold and turquoise and followers of incredible religious rituals.
As this program includes an interdisciplinary course, we will incorporate topics related to various disciplines including Visual Arts, Geography (Travel and Tourism), History (World Issues, Identity and Culture), Classical Civilizations and Anthropology to make this a fascinating course on exploration and discovery.
Your first 2 weeks will be online followed by an expedition for 2 weeks in Belize to complete the remainder of the course and experience the geography and culture of the country - and be amazed by the remains of great cities built centuries ago.
Field trips to working archaeological sites and virtual archaeology sites on the Internet will be explored so that students can appreciate how science, history, and imagination are all used by practicing archaeologists to create a coherent story of the past. Trips to museums will also be utilized to encourage student consideration of the problems of defining, storing, and cataloguing artifacts.
We will focus on a case study dealing with the many legal and ethical issues involving control and ownership of artifacts and you will be involved in a Simulated Archaeological Excavation and complete an Archaeological Journal as we travel to key sites around Belize.
Our residence will be at a research station and hotel in the spectacular jungles of Belize! Traditional foods are prepared daily all with local fresh ingredients for breakfasts, lunches and dinners which are included in your program.
