All Excursions as noted below for this program are Included in your program and are free.
Vietnam: War Museum & Tunnels The Cu Chi tunnels played a vital role allowing the Viet Cong (Communists) to control a large rural area only 30 to 40 km from Saigon during the Vietnam - American war in the late 1960's and 70's. At its height, the tunnel system stretched from Saigon to the Cambodian border. The network, parts of which were several levels deep, included innumerable trap doors, specially constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command centres and kitchens. And you will have the opportunity to take a walk inside – if you can fit, as these tunnels are quite small!
Mekong River Cruise/Floating Markets Mekong is the 12th longest river in the world winding its way from Tibet, China, Burma, Laos, Cambodia and finally into Vietnam. The region along the banks are incredibly fertile and naturally the prime industry is food production m- approximately half of Vietnam's total agricultural output is grown here. Life for villagers in the area revolves around the rivers and canals that make up the delta, and people are more likely to transport everything by river than by road. Meet the locals as you explore the villages and islands and sample some of the exotic foods and fruits grown in this area.
Cambodia: Temples of Siem Reap Angkor Wat is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking. It is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. We will have early wake up calls to visit this key temple, amongst many others, as they are spectacular at sunrise and sunset!
Elephant Ride to Temples What better way to travel – beats the bus! Our group will ride up to some of the temples on these massive Asian elephants and slowly but surely make it to the top!
Killing Fields A number of sites in Cambodia where large numbers of people were killed and buried by the totalitarian communist Khmer Rouge regime, during its rule of the country from 1975 to 1979.
S-21 Security Prison/Genocide Museum Khmer Rouge interrogation centre – an abandoned suburban high school converted into a torture prison. Approximately 20,000 people were tortured and killed here.
Royal Palace The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh was constructed over a century ago to serve as the residence of the King of Cambodia, his family and foreign dignitaries, as a venue for the performance of court ceremony, and as a symbol of the Kingdom. It serves to this day as the Cambodian home of King Norodom Sihamoni and former King Norodom Sihanouk whom the Cambodians revere greatly.
Russian Market Best place in town for souvenir, clothes and electronics shopping. This is where all the western clothing made in garment factories in Phnom Penh turn up – popular brands at about 10% of the cost paid back home. Try out your “bartering” skills here as it is expected! |
Our programs are enhanced by additional excursions which go beyond the focus of the course and give students the option to explore areas outside of the region in which our programs are located, in a supervised environment with private coaches and guides. Schedules and costs of these excursions are provided to students in March.
